backspace vs delete

Sometimes when I ssh to another machine and use emacs, the backspace
button acts as delete instead of backspace. What do I have to do to fix
this?

The most obvious thing is to change the configuration of your ssh
client. Almost all ssh clients have an option for how the backspace
key is handled, and whether it sends a delete-key code instead.
