Hi, I am having trouble to use latex within Emacs. What I did was the
following.

1) I typed " M+x latex-mode"
2) within latex mode, I typed

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
Hello,world.
\end{document}
3) I typed "C+c C+b"

Then I get the message that " bash:latex not found."
I have installed Redhat 9 recently, and I feel that latex did not come
with Redhat 9 when I installed it. I typed both " man latex " and "man
tex" and they both said "no manual for latex command." or "no manual for
tex command." Could you tell me what file I should download from
Redhat's website?
I am also interested in sending Email, using Emacs. I have not been
able to find a website that explains how to send and read emails, and
how to create an address book for Emacs. Could you give me any
suggestions on that?
Thank you very much in advance, and have a nice day.

Presumably you have the RHL9 CDs? The rpms you want are (I believe) all
named tetex*.rpm (there are several of them - install all of them). They
will be on the CDs, just search for them. Once you've found them install
them like this:

rpm -ivh /mnt/cdrom/path/to/packagename.rpm

You can also check whether they are already installed by doing this:

rpm -qa | grep tetex

Alternatively, you can use the redhat-config-packages tool (type that in a
terminal, or select the appropriate command from the GNOME/KDE menu - I
can't remember what it is because I've installed XD2 and it changes the
menu structure). If you have fast internet access (and you know the
package names) I believe you can also do up2date tetex<whatever> at the
command line and that will download them for you.

You will also want to install and configure AUC-TeX. Go here:

http://www.gnu.org/software/auctex/

and follow the instructions. There is an RPM you can download.

You'd be much better off keeping separate requests to separate messages.

Best, Darren

I believe there is one of two causes for this that are more likely
than anything else:

1. either TeX is not installed on your system
2. or the binaries are not in your path and not found

I think #1 is the most likely. You want to get hold of the RPM
packages that have "tetex" in their names, they contain the TeX system
for RedHat Linux that you need.

You can either get them from your Linux CDs or download them from
RedHats FTP (or preferably a mirror of theirs as they are notoriously
slow).

During installation you have the option to select what goes into your
installation. Maybe the choices you made excluded TeX. But I am sure
they are on your CDs.

I use a package called Gnus for my emailing, it is a usenet news
client but it handles mail excellently. There are some groups that
deal with this more exclusively, but I have gone from knowning nothing
about it to setting it up and getting it to work pretty well so you
are welcome to email me if you want some help setting it up or so.

Thank you very much for your reply. I actually started to learn about
Gnus today. I might be asking you some questions later on.
Thank you, and have a good day.

Gnus is good. However, emacs comes with a default mail client called
rmail, so you could try that - see the emacs info manual for
details. I think standard emacs also has mh support as well.

For news I use VM which I find excellent. See

There are a number of other mail clients available - possibly find
more at http://www.emacswiki.org

The e-mail address on this message is FALSE (obviously!). My real e-mail is
to a company in Australia called rapttech and my login is tcross - if you
really need to send mail, you should be able to work it out!
